Job Description

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Credentialing Specialist to join our Medical Staff Office. This role is distinct from provider enrollment or CVO functions and focuses on credentialing physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs), and allied health professionals for hospital privileges. You will work closely with HR, department leaders, and providers to ensure a seamless and compliant onboarding experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the full credentialing lifecycle for MDs, DOs, NPs, PAs, PTs, and other allied health professionals—from application to Board of Trustees approval.
  • Conduct thorough background investigations, including NPDB checks, malpractice history reviews, gap analysis, and reference verification.
  • Collaborate with HR post-offer to initiate onboarding and ensure alignment with credentialing timelines.
  • Guide providers through the credentialing process, collecting case logs and documentation to meet privileging criteria.
  • Maintain accurate records in credentialing software systems, including Cactus/Symplr & Echo.
  • Identify behavioral patterns or red flags in application histories and escalate appropriately.
  • Prepare credentialing files for monthly committee reviews and maintain compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.
  • Handle a caseload of 5+ active files, processing approximately 30 applications monthly, with seasonal surges of 60–70 during new graduate onboarding months.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Experience with Credentialing Software – Familiarity with Cactus and/or Symplr or Echo.
  • Ability to conduct deep background checks, identify gaps in time, and analyze malpractice patterns using tools like NPDB.
  • Experience working on at least 5+ files at one given time working on initial appointments and re-appointments.
  • Comfortable speaking with providers, references, department heads, and HR partners.
